RISING 8th GRADE SUMMER READING:

Students have received a copy of their summer reading as Rising 8th
Graders.  Students will read Walter Dean Meyers' The Glory Field and be
tested over it during the first week of school, Wednesday, August 19th. The
test is closed book, but you are required to take notes on one sheet of
notebook paper; you may write on the front and back sides.  Notes are
required to be handwritten; they are not to be typed or Xeroxed. Notes will
be collected.

Students will also create a poster of the six eras: 1753, 1864, 1900,
1930, 1964, and 1994.  Each era must contain a caption explaining the scene
you have portrayed. You may use any art form: crayon, marker, watercolor,
colored pencils, collage, pen and ink...) The book title and author must be
on the front of your poster too.  Your name, date, and period will be on the
back of the poster.  Use a standard sized poster of about 22"x28".  Poster is
due Tuesday, August 18th. You will be graded on following directions,
choosing an appropriate scene for each era, neatness, effort, use of color,
and it is obvious you have spent some time on the project.

Students will also read Homer Hickman's October Sky.  You will write a five-
paragraph expository essay describing Sonny's relationship with one of his
family members: his mom, dad, or older brother Jim.  Your essay should
contain specific examples from the text and a minimum of two direct quotes.
Your typewritten, 12 pt. font, double spaced essay is due Friday, August
21st. Do not forget the Works Cited page, the last page of your essay,
containing author, book title, publishing city, publisher, and year. Essay is
due Friday, August 21st. You will also be tested over this book.
