2009 Rising 7th Grade Summer Reading

The 2009 summer reading for Meigs rising 7th graders will consist of three books:  Hoot by Carl Hiassen, one selection from a list of four recommended novels, and one social studies book. These books are not taught in class.

 

1.     Required Novel:  Hoot by Carl Hiassen

 

A.      You will have a comprehension test Wednesday, August 19, 2009. It will consist of fifty multiple choice questions. You will NOT be allowed to use your notes or book during this test. 

 

B.       Book Cover Artwork

Design a new book cover for Hoot. You may use any technique—water color, pen and ink, crayons, collage, cartoon, etc.  Be sure to include the title and author on the cover.  Please write your first and last name, date, and period on the back of the sheet.  Use a standard 8 ½” x 11 ½” sheet of typing paper.  Your cover art is due Wednesday, August 19, 2009.  You will be graded on four criteria:

1.        Your ability to follow directions

2.       Creativity and use of color

3.       Neatness

4.       Effort

It is obvious you have spent some thought and put some effort into this book cover.

 

2.     Select one from this list four:

 

1.        Where the Lilies Bloom by Bill and Vera Cleaver

2.       Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie

3.       Summer of My German Soldier by Bette Greene

4.       When Zachary Beaver Came to Town by Kimberly Willis Holt

 

                                   You will have an objective comprehension test on the novel you read.

                                  This is NOT an open book test, but you will be permitted to use your

                                   handwritten notes.  You are required to take notes.  You may write on  

                                   both sides of an 8 ½” x 11” sheet of notebook paper.  Notes may not             

                                   be Xeroxed or typed.  Notes will also be collected. Test is multiple

                                   choice and will be Friday, August 21, 2009.

 

3.     Novel Required for Social Studies

 

You will read Iqbal by Francesco D”Adamo (translated by Ann Leonori).  You will be tested over this novel Thursday, August 20, 2009.
