Sixth Grade Summer Reading
Required Novels:
Holes by Louis Sachar
Dragon Wings by Laurence Yep
Choice of one of the following:
A View from Saturday by E.L. Konigsburg
A Long Way from Chicago by Richard Peck
The Egypt Game by Zilpha Keatley Snyder
Activity
1. Once you have read all three novels, your assignment is to create a newspaper. Your newspaper needs to be on legal size paper and preferably typed. Your paper must include the following:
2. Write a feature story on Moonshadow; be sure to cover his life. Tell major events, places he has lived, and include quotes from him and other characters, etc. Remember the questions a good newspaper article answers: Who? What? When? Where? How?
3. Write an editorial about Camp Green Lake. Be sure to take a stand on whether it is right to use a place like that to send kids for punishment. What are the benefits? What are the negatives? Consider writing the article from a character’s perspective.
4. Write a book review of A View from Saturday, A Long Way from Chicago, or The Egypt Game. Do not simply summarize the book. The review should include a rating, what you liked about the book, and reasons why you connected with the book.
5. Create three advertisements based on the books you read. Be creative! The ad may be for the book or an element from the book (ex. can of Sploosh).
6. Choose one book and create a comic based on the book. It should be at least 5 frames in length and contain some of the characters from the book in a sequence of events that is fictional.
Newspapers are due Friday, August 21st. |
