Meigs Memos
Tuesday, September 22, 2009
A Weekly Publication of
From Jon Hubble, Principal ….. As you can see, there is quite a bit of valuable information in this edition of Memos. We appreciate so much everything that all of the stakeholders in our community are doing to make Meigs an even better place!
Happy Autumn!
Attendance: It is wonderful to see that so many parents are using GradeSpeed ParentConnection to check on their child's progress. Please understand that Metro Schools recognize the Chancery database as the official attendance record for your child ... NOT the GradeSpeed database. Individual schools do not have any access to the attendance records in the GradeSpeed database. The attendance records that you see in GradeSpeed do not necessarily reflect the official attendance record in Chancery. You will be able to see the official (and accurate) attendance record for your child on each report card. We realize that this can be confusing, but Metro continues to take steps to correct this issue.
Parents, please use your student’s full name and include their grade when e-mailing or sending in an excuse for an absence. This makes it easier to find in chancery. Thank you.
PTO News
INVEST in Excellence: Letters were mailed home to parents last week concerning the PTO’s biggest fundraising effort – Invest in Excellence. If you did not receive an Invest brochure in the mail, there are extras in the school office.
We have started off with a bang, raising nearly $7,800 in the first week. This is your opportunity to keep Meigs the high caliber school that it is. ALL MONEY GOES DIRECTLY TO MEIGS FOR OUR CHILDREN and DONATIONS ARE TAX DEDUCTIBLE. Remember that every dollar counts. No pledge is too big or too small. Here are the rewards the students can earn:
* Any student who returns a signed pledge card – whether they give or not – receives a goodie bag with a wristband (for 5th grade) or a dog tag (6th-8th grade) included. They are also eligible for random prize drawings.
* Other prizes focus on the spirit of giving, with rewards for the classrooms at each grade level with the highest percentage of students donating money and rewards for the classrooms with 100% of the students giving money. The amount given does not matter here.
* There is a DJ party reward for the classrooms reaching their monetary goal. Always fun and the kids love it.
* There will also be a special school-wide prize if we raise $53,000 this year. Last year, we raised $50,000, so we know we can do it.
The Investment begins to be realized! Because of parent’s generosity to Meigs to date, the PTO has already been able to make several purchases. Thanks to you, the 5th grade teachers and the foreign language department have received $3,500 worth of technology with five ELMOS for classroom instruction. Thanks to you, every teacher received a $50 gift card to Staples while teachers brand new to Meigs received an additional $50 gift card. Thanks to you, the liberal arts are alive and well at Meigs Middle with art, band, choir, and strings receiving full support of their budget requests amounting to $8,000. Teacher websites are up and running, thanks to PTO’s support of $1,400. The new safety signs for the welfare of our children were $550, while our hospitality parents have treated faculty to a couple of wonderful “Welcome Back” breakfasts as well as the First Day coffee and doughnuts. More purchases and projects are just waiting in the wings for your gift of support to our school. It is a great place to be.~ Sincerely, Greta Requierme, Meigs PTO President
From Stephanie Burnett, Spanish Teacher, Meigs Middle: “I love my ELMO! I used it in every class today. I can’t thank you enough. It’s truly sparked all kinds of creative ideas I can use in my classroom now. Muchas Gracias!”
Clip and save the entire Project A+ label from participating Tyson products. The products are found in your grocer’s freezer case. Each label we collect is worth 24 cents to Meigs! The label you save is easily identified by looking for the 1, 2, 3 program steps.
Students can drop off the labels in the school office. Students receive a prize for every 10 labels they return. For more information, visit http://ProjectAPlus.tyson.com.
The Meigs PTO Landscape Committee is having a Landscape Day on November 7, 2009 at the school from 8:00am to 11:30am. Be sure to save the date on your calendar. Parents and children alike are welcome to help plant and mulch. Check out our link on the school website at www.meigsmagnetms.mnps.org to learn the plants we’ll be installing. Donations of the listed plants are welcome and we are accepting memorial gifts for tree purchases as well. Watch Memos for updates.
The next PTO meeting is scheduled for Thursday, October 8th at 8:10am in the library. All are welcome. Minutes from the September 11, 2009 meeting will be posted on the school website and on the PTO bulletin board this week.
Meigs needs PENCIL PARTNERS! We are looking for
individuals and organizations (i.e. businesses, civic clubs, church
groups) that are willing to help make Meigs the best that it can be. PENCIL
PARTNERS can give to Meigs in many ways. A PENCIL PARTNER might make a
one-time, in-kind donation, discount a service, provide volunteers for school
projects or events, or fund a specific need. No contribution is too small. If
you work for or belong to an organization that might be interested in becoming
a PENCIL PARTNER, please contact Meigs parent, Bethany Jackson, at bjacksontn@earthlink.net.
*The PENCIL (Public Education Needs Community Involvement & Leadership),
established in 1982, promotes community involvement in Metro Nashville Public
Schools by helping schools build partnerships with community and business
organizations. See http://www.pencilfoundation.org/.
Kroger cards: Beginning September 1st, each time you reload your Meigs Kroger gift card during September you will have an entry in our drawing for a $25 Kroger gift card to be given away at the October PTO meeting. We will be sponsoring a winner every month, so keep using those cards! Kroger is a great community partner. Last year they rebated us approximately $8,000 thanks to our parents who took the time to reload those cards before the purchase. Contact Mary Ellen Pickrell for more information, mes@wallerlaw.com
BoxTops4Education: Clip and save General Mills BoxTops4Education. Send in twenty-five at a time to the office and your student will receive a thank you prize. Meigs earns ten cents per box top. This amounted to $600 for Meigs last year. Consider putting a collection container at your office, break room, or place of worship. Encourage your friends and co-workers to clip Box Tops for Meigs. To obtain a FREE General Mills collection box, contact Tracey Gholson at gholsont@bellsouth.net
